Squire has gotten wind of the existence of the $10k prize money, but so far has been fended off from getting his hands on it. Though a winner has been rewarded, Grandpap and Abner continue to discuss worthy projects for the money. Will they be forced to build that toll bridge that Mr. Quincy insists on having built? The bridge is impractical for Pine Ridge, other than to keep Mr. Quincy occupied as toll bridge keeper.
Grandpap reads more trivial tidbits from the almanac about alligator eggs, a topic that frustrates Abner. Lum enters with the news that the town is buzzing about having the contest money, and in coming up with more ideas on how to spend it. The confusing ideas about alligator farms has Lum bent out of shape, but he doesn’t have room to complain much when a last-minute phone call reveals his own plan to build a statue in his own honor.
