Lum surprises Abner by talking like the now missing Diogenes. Lum tells how he has been left in full authority of the work Diogenes started in town with the pamphlets on honesty. Will Abner take to being called Herald? The nickname that Diogenes always called Lum.
Instead, the confused Abner goes off on a tangent talking about his uncle Frank’s hound dog named Frank. As Abner is going over how he’ll go about delivering the pamphlets that Lum had been delivering, Cedric enters with his lantern, actually two lanterns, and shares that Diogenes left full charge of the operation to him.
Cedric also shares how much of a rush that Diogenes was in to leave, even to the point of dropping his keys in his car. Lum argues with Cedric over who is actually in charge, but a last-minute telephone call seems to settle the matter. At least for the moment.
