mama has a hard time waking Jake up in the morning. She needs to discuss Yetta’s engagement to Harold with him. She applies her logic to explain how exchanging gifts makes everybody feel better. Jake shouldn’t worry over the bills.
Jake and Becky argue over the world went engagement of their daughter, and an old flame of Jake’s. Jake tries to downplay his old girlfriend, but Becky seems to have a photographic memory over details of their dates.
Yetta enters in high spirits to ask how her parents feel about her surprise engagement. Mama isn’t sure if Yetta is in love with Jim, or the money of his wealthy family. Yetta wants to plan her wedding for noon, but mama holds out for a nighttime event.
With a wedding planned for a month away, Yetta claims that will give her parents time to go out and get new furniture to fix the place up. At first Jake balks at the purchases, but when Yetta reveals who her new in-laws will be mama panics as Jake runs out to go shopping.
