Lum and Abner -Lizabeth Thinks Abner Is Having An Affair With Hortense. 350130

Horlick’s. Feeling run down in the middle of the morning, or afternoon? Carry a few Horlicks tablets with you for a quick pick up.

Little did Lum and Abner realize the trouble they would cause in sending out Abner’s picture to all the women in the matrimonial bureau. Now Abner’s wife, Lizabeth thinks he has had an affair, and won’t let him explain himself. Lum tries to keep up with business as usual, but the distracted Abner wants him to go and explain what happened to Lizabeth. Knowing that she just won’t let the guys get in a word in edgewise, Lum comes up with a new way to gain her sympathies. An idea lands on their lap when Cedric stops in for a visit, and a chat about woman troubles. The guys conspire to fake an accident.

Horlicks drama. A couple ladies discuss a new educing plan. No harmful chemicals, just a delicious light meal featuring tablets of Horlicks dissolved into a tasty drink.

PS: Although none of the sponsors in any of these old-time radio shows is endorsed by the Retro Radio Podcast in any way, can you say that I’m intrigued by this one? I’m fascinated by the miraculous power of this food product, and yet if it was so wonderful… what happened to it? It reminds me of other modern products that claim to be diet aids. “Just add water to this powdered wonder product and you get a whole day’s dose of nutritional value.” or “Just one delicious shake, and it’s like eating a complete breakfast.”

How can a single product be the answer to both losing weight, and in putting on weight, and be healthy all at once? It all started out as baby food. Horlicks powder was designed to be food for babies, or those who were sick, and not able to eat solid foods. The product contained enough substance to help the body grow and gain strength while being easy to digest. Beyond that… well, I personally think it’s all hype, but not entirely without basis.

Stay tuned for the word on more Horlick’s trivia, and editorial.

Lum and Abner -Abner Is In Bed With Two Broken Arms. 350131

Horlicks. Be on guard against cold and sickness with this highly digestive food.

Abner has been going through domestic troubles at home. The plan to gain sympathy by faking being hit by a car is working well, maybe too well. Abner is having trouble keeping his lies straight, but the whole town is buzzing about the accident. Lizabeth does seem to have Abner back in her good graces, but how long do the boys need to keep up this scam? Lum has a new business proposition that he is keeping under his hat for now.

Horlicks. Taken as a hot drink, it’s the answer for a sleepless night.

PS: Designed as a food for infants, and those recovering from illness, Horlick’s probably does act as something of a comfort food. Offering substance to an empty stomach to settle it. The digestion process then would cause a person to relax and become drowsy, while being easy to digest at the same time. But what about other claims that are made in the advertising hype? It’s mostly just that, hype.

Lum and Abner -Financing The ReOpening Of The Jotem Down Store. 350201

Horlicks. Demand it by name. Don’t accept substitutes. There is none equal to this quality, nourishing food stuff.

Lum has announced he will be starting a fund-raising project to raise money to reopen the store. I wonder what it can be this time? Dick Huttleston talks to Abner about his accident, and tries to figure out who did it. It was a nice idea to distract the wrath of Lizabeth from all of Abner’s shortfalls, but what kind of mess will he be in if she discovers the fraud behind this accident. After Dick leaves, Lum spills the beans to Abner what his business idea is going to be. The store will offer miniature, fountain pen sized, flash lights. A handy little gadget that anybody could use. Horlicks is to sponsor the project by using it as an advertising campaign while Lum and Abner give the flashlights away as a promo to their listeners.

Horlick Drama. Two women talk about the nourishing properties of Horlicks, and how they make a great lunch for kids at school.

Note: Do I really need to say it? Any contests, product or promotional giveaways mentioned on old time radio shows are no longer in affect. You’re only late by several decades if you expect to participate. Please don’t write to me with requests for tiny little flashlights. I don’t have any. Although if you insist, I’ll gladly accept your donations of any amount of cash you feel obligated to part with. Send me a comment or email, and I’ll tell you where to send it.
