It may be unusual to say something good about a murderer, but the strange case of the brothers Staunton is one where a certain virtue comes into play.
An artist and an auctioneer’s clerk, Pat and Louie celebrate when they locate a nice place to live, and the close brothers even plan to marry sisters. When Louie takes a different path, and marries for money, things aren’t so happy anymore.
Harriot’s mother is suspicious, but Louie weds her anyway. Can you say that trouble is brewing when the unmarried sister, Alce has a thing for Louie, and they get together on the side?
Months go by, and with no word from Harriot, her mom gets concerned. Little did anyone suspect that Harriot was… no, not dead, but a starving prisoner in her own home. Harriot finds evidence of the affair, and like with any wife, confronts Louie with all her scorn. Louie and Pat develop a plan. The bickering and noise have gotten to the creative ability of Louie the artist. What can be done to settle the problem? Alice comes up with a plan.
Murder and a plot to get rid of the body are hatched. Through only the scantest of coincidence Scotland Yard connects the dots with the complaint of Harriot’s mom, and the unusual state of Harriot’s medical condition when she is left in care of a sanitarium. Once attention has been focused on the case, things move fast as the wheels of justice roll.
No amount of brotherly love can keep this family from paying for murder.
