The classic tale by Rudyard Kipling. You are struggling through the wilderness, suffering from thirst and exhaustion, and fleeing from the people who once made you king, but now want to kill you.

Two fortune seekers set out on a serious quest to become kings. A newspaper journalist tells their story in flashback when one of the men return to his door, years later and near death. The adventurers did achieve the fame and fortune they sought, but at a price. Their status as gods all fall apart when the natives of their kingdom discover their mortality.
