Jack Benny – Gladys Zybisco Is Discussed. ep358, 400121

Jack Benny and Carmichael 1939.

Don’s glowing introduction gets interrupted, when Phil Harris lets him know, Jack isn’t here. Mary Livingstone says he’s in the hall, talking to his new girlfriend, Gladys, or at least having trouble connecting through the operator. Phil takes over as emcee, and whips out corny jokes. Is this what it’ll take to get Jack away from the phone? Mary saves the audience from the old, vaudeville style jokes by having Phil play a jazzy interlude.

Jack is still having trouble with the phone operator, but finally gets to talk with Gladys’s dad. Finally, he returns in time for Don’s commercial. He and the cast discuss Gladys, and being flirted with in the restaurant where she’s the waitress. Jack tells about his hot date, and the jitterbug contest he and Gladys won. Dennis Day enters to comment on Jack’s likelihood to win the Oscars. Jack announces the upcoming show will be on the road, and invites Mary to ride in the Maxwell with him. As Jack races out to pack, get interrupted by a quick phone call that still has trouble connecting, Dennis sings, Careless.

After an unexpected windfall, Jack splurges, and takes a cab ride home. Ronald Coleman is mentioned, but it would be some time before he would make an appearance on the show. Rochester is surprised to see Jack and Mary so soon. Has he been caught doing something? Using Jack’s stuff? Jack’s stingy food habits are revealed, when Mary wants a bite to eat. Travel plans are made to take the Maxwell to Oakland. It should only take a day… right? Mr. Mister Billingsley enters to joke about Jack’s polar bear and ostrich.

The packing takes a back seat when Jack is once again on the phone to try to connect to his girlfriend in Azusa.
