"Vintage radio with a wooden exterior and large speaker grille sits on a table. Its black dials and knobs are visible, and the illuminated green signal indicates that it is powered on."

Christine McKay has been ordered to a health resort by her doctor, but can’t afford the hotel any longer. Looking for a new place to stay, she finds a friend in Mrs. Drake, who rents to her at a low rate because the lonely woman is thrilled at having a companion around. Awakened from a peaceful sleep, Christine sees a man carry the dead body of Mrs. Drake outside. Can she keep her presence secret from the killer long enough to contact the police? In the morning Mr. Drake and Christine do some verbal sparring to learn more about the other, and what they know. Taking advantage of her nervous condition, Mr. Drake sends her on her way. Instead of leaving, Christine goes to the cops, but the address she gives causes alarm from the police. Imagine her surprise to find Mr. Drake is the police commissioner.

Can she get the chief to believe her story? Drake is still trying to tell her she imagined it all, and it’s all just her nerves. Is the woman staying in a hotel that’s 2 hours away actually Mrs. Drake, or an imposter? Before long Christine finds herself on the defensive, frustrated, and feeling helpless. Is she losing touch with the reality she saw with her own eyes? Chris grasps at clues to prove what she saw. A telegraph receipt, and another trip to the house to look for the body. Cutting too close to the truth may place her in personal danger.

Will there be another murder to cover up the first one? A twist in the chain of events exposes all the secrets to bring justice on the killer. When Christine goes to tell her story this time, she’s sure to be believed.
