Mel warms up the audience with a song that may be somewhat biographical for him, A Face Made for Radio. At least he gets the chance to showcase the various shows he appears on, and the characters he portrays on them.
The show opens in earnest as we listen to various men buying special gifts for their special girlfriends. All except for Mel. In the fix it shops Mel and Betty flip through the pages of the wish book catalog, and dream of what it’ll be like at Christmas after they’re married. Why does Mr. Colby like Willie Murdock, the manager at the supermarket, better than Mel? What does he have that Mel doesn’t? Colby has decided to have his supermarket sponsor a radio program. Though Mel flubs a line, he demonstrates a tiny bit of his vocal talent as he recovers.

To raise money for a Christmas present, Mel hopes to get the job as Master of Ceremonies on the radio show that Colby is sponsoring. Sending Zookie out to collect bills from customers, things don’t go so well for the stammering helper. Mighty Potentate of the Zebras,
Mr. Cushing pops into the fix it shops to relate how his dysfunctional marriage is going. He married for money, and now he’s paying the price. The conversation gives Mel the idea to dress in drag to win the contest for being the oldest lady at the supermarket. Will Colby see through his disguise? He at least turns Mel’s earlier flub into a recurring gag.
