He just isn’t interested in Miss Pitts, the way she is in him.
Maybe a poem, or letter to let her down easy will do. If men are getting more scarce than women, might the government start rationing men? Lum goes wild over a picture of a woman, and wants her all to himself when she comes to town. Andy pops in, and is surprised to hear Lum may be getting married soon.
When Andy sees the picture, he thinks he has the best shot at the woman. Zazu Pitts enters, and Lum thinks its his time to tell he’s breaking it off with her. The news is a shock to her. Hinting that lacy things in her hope chest will go unused.
Abner enters from the train depot to report on the woman. The outlook for Lum isn’t good. Opie Cates enters, and Lum tries to push Lydia off onto him. Will Lum’s suit fit Opie, even if he cuts it down to size?
Luke Spears enters, and Lum thinks he can offer advice to ditch Lydia. He tells about his own mail order bride. Finally Lydia enters, and Lum pretends to have amnesia. Abner tries to explain how Lum got amnesia, his dad bounced him on his knee… under the table.
Miss Pitts enters, and Lum’s cover is blown when he calls her by name. If Lum announces his engagement to Miss Pitts, it’ll be the answer to dumping Lydia. The girls step aside and share a secret.
