William wishes he was already grown-up. He is in need of a dollar to buy treats for his friends. He complains that his dad is in a bad mood today, probably over concerns with money. Will it be a good time to ask for some spending money?
He interrupts his dad as he is going over family finances. William learns a little bit about where the family money goes to. William does his best to convince his father he needs a dollar. His sister Julie enters and gives compliments from everyone on her new handmade dress. In a generous mood, dad gives William his dollar.
Williams friend skinny begins to plan ideas of cutting out their friends, so they can enjoy the dollar all to themselves. William wants to be responsible with his friends. Just at that moment they discovered their dollar is missing. Can they find it before someone else does?
An honest stranger is so impressed with William’s idea of tasty treats. He tells them of being hungry and his old country. Will he give William some ideas and being responsible with his dollar? William learns of the hardships that others go through. William imagines what his family would be like if they had to go through a time of being destitute. He imagines the difficulties in finding a job in a war-torn country. Would he be reduced to stealing to get some bread?
The tragic story has an effect on William or his friends? He and his friends and spent the day scraping up money from the neighborhood to donate to charities. What will his dad think about his newfound gratitude and responsibility?
