In a fashionable home, a couple share dinner in relative silence. Before the husband can share what’s on his mind, he drops dead of poisoning. The distraught wife takes the case to Mr Keen.

As the wife tells Mr Keen the details, facts emerge that the maid is the prime suspect, the poison was a fast acting one, and there may be blackmail involved. Mr Keen and Mike don’t believe it, and begin to see a more complicated mystery than they first thought.

Mr Keen goes to the scene of the crime to begin his investigation, and the flood of clues and characters keep on coming. Mrs Barker gets a threatening letter, with a skull and crossbones, similar to one her husband recieved before his death. Is there anything to it?

Mr Keen has his suspicions about the dead man’s nephew, and he sets about clearing the air. There’s plenty of motive and circumstantial evidence to go around, but who had the opportunity? An important phone call comes in to report that the maid has turned herself in. After interviewing her, Mr Keen has it all figured out, and when he brings the key players together, he puts the finger on the killer, and shares his reasoning.
