Multiple explosions in the area have the Barbers upset. A stranger is found running across the stubble field, who needs hospital care. Authorities have been alerted to the situation as Jack races the man to town to seek medical attention.

The dust settles at the homestead as a few of the Barbers talk about the drama of the hous earlier. Could it be invaders, or saboteurs? Family plans take over regarding going to college, and getting specialized training to enter the military. Concerns of losing Teddie to the war effort is expressed.

Jack returns with more news about the earlier struggle and of a man who was killed right outside their door. Are there other enemy invaders in the area to worry about? Teddie and Irene come down from upstairs to worry over their menfolk out on the manhunt.
Matters of a book dedication arise. Nick and Cliff return for a cozy reception. Will there be any new news to tell about the intelligence men out combing the woods? A magazine article inspires the concept of treason and loyalty on levels from helping the enemy escape captivity to that at high levels of our political body. But wait, someone is missing, and has left a brief note to say their goodbyes.
