A supply train returns to the fort, and Captain Quince is surprised to find a civilian wagon in the patrol. Mrs Wintner is looking for her husband, a field officer who was killed a hundred miles deep into indian territory. She won’t settle for anything less than going to the gravesite, and taking her husbands body back with her. Will the stubborn woman’s insistence cause a war with the indians?
The widow gets the grand tour, and watches the troops drill. She isn’t impressed, and can’t understand why her husband was attracted to duty at the remote fort. Can Quince and Daggert persuade the widow from her insistence on going to the grave? Is there anything they can do to change her mind?
The widow is found missing, but by the time Quince can catch up to her, there’s only one thing left to do. They’re so close, they ride the rest of the way to the hastily dug grave. Is the morbid scene what Mrs Wintner really wants? Does it matter if the man lays in a hero’s grave in Alington, or in the one he’s in on the plains? What about dangers from the indians? Will there be satisfaction for the woman? For the indians?
