A security guard dressed in a dark uniform is reaching for his sidearm, which is holstered on his right hip. He stands in front of a brick wall, with his left hand resting on his belt. His facial expression suggests a state of high alertness and readiness to act in case of any threat or danger.

Jessica is the wife of Carlos, and her sister is worried that he just married her for her money. The sister notices that in Jessica’s absence, her cat has just had kittens. Why do the cat and kittens frighten Carlos? Later, the sister, Mis Simmons reports to the police that Jessica has now been missing for 3 weeks. Did she actually go to Detroit as Carlos claimed, or is there some other answer?

Investigating the penthouse apartment, Ann Williams and Casey find the litter of kittens, all thriving quite well. What evidence might they turn up as they and the cops go to question Carlos? There’s enough circumstantial evidence, and the cops pick up Carlos on suspicion of killing Jessica.

Casey stops in at the Blue Note to talk with his favorite bar tender, Ethylbert, and reports that there wasn’t enough to hold Carlos for long. Did he do it? Maybe it was the scandalous new girlfriend that Carlos was found with, or sister Simmons? As it usually does for Casey, the casual atmosphere inspires him, and he’s off to set a trap.

There’s still the matter of the kittens. What part do they play? It won’t be easy since Carlos has fled the scene. Can Casey and the cops spring their trap before another murder goes down? The solution includes danger, death, and alittle superstitious fear.
