While enjoying a leisureley road trip down the coast, Candy, Ray Mallard, and Rembrandt Watson talk about their destination, the mission at San Juan Batista. Such a nice, pastoral setting what could possibly go wrong? Word comes of the death of a Mexican boy who has been shot on the mission grounds.
Candy helps get the local police on the case. One thing is certain, it’s murder and not suicide. Candy interviews the padre to get details of the mission, and details of the victim. Potential suspects begin to emerge.
What does the alluring girl, Miss Taylor, have to do with the case? Maybe matters of money come into play? Candy manages to ask just the right questions that make the puzzle pieces fall together. By the time the local sheriff arrives, Candy is back at the mission and confronts the killer and gets a complete confession, clearing any circumstantial evidence around any other suspects. A guilty conscience brings about it’s own justice.
Despite the tragedy, a message of forgiveness and doing what is right is presented.
