Miss Brooks recounts an event that she experienced recently when weighing herself on a penny scale. The card it spit out, promised that she would meet a tall dark man soon. Who could that be? How can she find out? Mrs Davis suggests having tea leaves read. Not only does she predict the dark man, but children as well.
As Walter takes Miss Brooks to school, he seeks advice from her about Harriot. When Connie goes to talk with Hariot they both have had the same fortune from the scale. They both even come across the same mystery man. He’s a new teacher from France, and they both want to show him the ropes. Who will win the honors?
Mr Conklin is no help in choosing. Mr Boynton has to bow out of the lunch date where Connie and the French teacher will be meeting. It seems that his frog has a sore throat. Poor little MacDoogal.
Connie asks the French teacher to speak only French in front of Mr Boynton. It seems to be an effort to make Boynton jealous. In an awkward moment, Boynton is offended over a comment about frogs, and leaves. The French teacher shows a special interest, and has a proposal for Connie. Is this the mysterious, dark man? What about those kids that were predicted?
