Jack Benny – Scoop Benny. ep281, 380123

Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone and Don Wilson posing for a photo in 1938.

Jack and Don talk about being the muscular outdoors type. Phil joins in the conversation to poke fun of each other’s athletic prowess, and their personal habits. Mary arrives and greets Don and Phil, but Jack seems to be ignoring her. Jack tells about his part in his upcoming film where he plays a kleptomaniac. He tells about his love interest. Mary has a comment of her own about Jacks love scenes. Mary tells about a movie idea for Jack that she had where she cast Jack in a movie where he is on a deserted island, and his leading ladies swim away, leaving him with nobody but an ape.

Phil takes over and plays a tune. Kenny arrives to talk about movies as well. Jack has Mary phone a German gal so Jack can ask her to appear in his film, and he has some fun with dialects. Jack is trying to make an impression, but is clearly upset when the lady asks about bringing Phil along to their private rehearsal. Kenny sings, Love Walked in With You.

Jack’s still mad over Phil, but tries to hide it. The play has Jack cast as a big time newspaper reporter on the track of big time mobsters. Mary, Kenny, and Phil are his reporters, who get all their late breaking stories by reading about them in rival newspapers. Scoop Benny runs the risk of bomb threats after laying it on hard with a local gangster. When he gets a ticking package in the mail, he seeks help to get rid of it. But will he be able to?

Don closes with the parting commercial, and another recipe idea for Jello. .

Trivia Alert: Early in the show Jack is teased about his hair piece. He never wore one in real life. Although some of his close friends did wear them, and never made it part of their act, or even hint that they wore one.
