Safely in the Delaware camp, Hawkeye and his friends have the support of the entire tribe to scour the forest for the missing Sly Fox and Cora. They also worry about their halfwit friend David, who helped Hawkeye to rescue Onka from the hands of the Hurons.

When they spot a loan, unarmed messenger, they realize it’s their friend David who has a word of warning. He says that the Hurons are racing toward them on the warpath. Though he has no weapon, the pacifist David is willing to use his sling to help regain the kidnapped woman from the Indians.

The battle has begun, as gunshots are heard in the direction of the Mingo camp. The Sly Fox is seen using Cora as a shield, but will she choose to enter his wigwam or her life? Luck fails when Onka is mortally wounded. In the end, Cora is retrieved and Hawkeye begins leading her and Duncan onto a two-day journey back to the fort.
