After the battle at Fort Henry, the Sly Fox has invaded, and major Duncan is distraught over the thought of losing his beloved Cora. There Mohican friend Gingacook brings promising news, saying that they are getting closer to their quarry in their march through the wilderness. Hawkeye addresses the concern that their enemies may be aware that they’re being followed. But he’s fairly confident the Sly Fox figures he’s given them the shake.

What they find instead is old David, a halfwit and a religious fanatic who seems to escape his captivity. Considered by the natives to be close to the gods, they allow him to roam free. The stroke of luck allows our heroes to devise a plan to infiltrate the Indian camp.
