With overwhelming forces of the French Army surrounding them, General Monroe has decided to surrender Fort Henry. If he goes through with it, will the troops and civilians in the fort be subjected to savage brutality at the hand of the Iroquois’? As the sun sets, can the frontiersman, Hawkeye offer any assurance?

In the woods, Hawkeye discusses the dire circumstance with major Duncan. The forest is full of danger as our hero’s comments on the night sound. Will their Mohican friends stand any chance of survival? Gingacook and his son, Onka have rejoined Hawkeye, but with the Oneida on their track, they’ll have to keep on the move.

Paddling a canoe down the river, Hawkeye instructs the major in the art of reading signs in the wilderness. To the untrained eye, all is peaceful and serene, but the experienced woodsman points out the danger in time to evade an ambush.
