Apple sales are on the move, but not as much as Lum anticipated. All it takes is a few apples to make a pie, not the bushels of apples that Lum hoped on selling. The income is enough to pay Abner back, and pay Lum’s printing bill, but what about the promised prize money for this contest?
Lum frets over his run of bad luck, and that he had more money before he started his contests to raise money. Should he just call it off? Abner gets confused over one of Lum’s old Ed’ardss sayings, but he’s even more worried of what the womenfolk might do to him if he backed out on the contest.
Miss Emaline phones, but will the word she brings be a ray of light for Lum, or only dig his hole deeper? Abner still hasn’t gotten over Lum’s figure of speech quite yet.
