To celebrate Art week, and Mother’s Day, the orchestra opens with a medley, Songs my mother taught me.

In 1738 Benjamin Webb, the first American artist was born. The Quaker boy learns his craft from a native, and how his people make art and draw Ben makes art for his mother, and by the age of 22 is well on his career, In the 1800’s Art schools are founded that launch more Amnerican artists, including sculpters.

Moving on, artists often had to return to London to learn their craft.
Paintings would become more than a way to tell a story, and become works of color and form.

Whistler painted his mother, and it became the first American art to hanng in the Louvre. He also brought a law suit against critics who stood in place to ruin his livelihood. Making art history, he defended his rreputation, and the value of his work. Whistler’s work has even reached honor in the White ouse.
