Abner and grandpap play checkers, while Lum is at home. Is Lum ailing, or recovering after a human fly stunt? Nope, he’s OK. He’s waiting for word from a radio program. He can win $500 if he’s at his phone when they make a random call.
As the two gents make their moves, they discuss Lum’s likelihood of recieving his call. They recap the situation that got Lum into his troubles that make him so desperate for the money. Abner has the radio in the store, but Lum’s set at home is broken. All he can do is sit by the phone and wait.
Abner and grandpap decide to pull a joke on Lum. They make the call, disguising their voices, and pretend to be from the Money Every Monday program. Has Lum fainted? Maybe the gents ought to go check on Lum and see if he’s OK. Well, just after a few more moves in their game of checkers. Cedric enters with news that clears hings up.
I missed this the first time around, but in listening to this episode again, there’s an important bit of trivia in this episode that might be a first for the show. Abner’s middle name is revealed. I also like because this is probably the first time a game of checkers is featured for more than a move or two. The game spans through the whole show as Lum and the radio contest show are discussed.
