Great Gildersleeve – Adopting The Baby. ep298, 481020

Harold Peary at the microphone, wearing a suit and hat. A black and white photograph of Harold Peary, a man in a suit and tie, smiling and looking off to the side. He is standing in front of a plain background, with his hands in his pockets. Peary was a comedian and actor, best known for his role as "The Great Gildersleeve" on radio and television in the 1940s and 1950s. The photograph conveys a sense of classic Hollywood glamour and style.

On a walk during this fine Autumn day, Gildersleeve learns from Judge Hooker that the baby could be taken away. The thing to do is adopt her. There’s just one catch, in the state they live in, an adoption will only be approved for married couples.

Gildy balks at the thought of marriage, even though he’s been engaged to nearly every single woman in town at one time or other. Marjorie steps up to the task, and is willing to sacrifice herself. Of course, her boyfriend, Ben, is clueless to the plans. Embarrassing and interesting moments occur as she tries to get Ben, and other boyfriends to do the right thing… you know… for the baby’s sake.

As Gildy back pedals on the decision of Marjorie’s marriage, he seeks advice from Peavey. Now he’s afraid she may elope. Will she? Can he stop her?

Note: In the run of the show, Marjorie does end up getting married, but here’s a hint, just not today. Her character started in 1941 as being old enough to be in Junior College, and work at a war plant. As the seasons progressed, her age regressed so she became a teenager, of undetermined age. LeRoy was always the 12 year old all through the run of the show. The baby never does become a permanent fixture. In fact, at the time I’m posting this I really don’t know her story, and what becomes of her. I haven’t listened to this season yet. It’s all new to me as I listen, enjoy and share with you.
