As Chester whistles an old hymn, (of course at the time period of the show, it would have been a brand new hymn) he stops to talk with Matt about a couple of new characters in town. When Matt and Chester approach the pair, they learn that it’s uncle Oliver and his simpleminded relative.

The elder man wants the younger to be a US Marshal, and what better way than to be deputy for Mat? There’s just the matter that Chester already holds that job. Of course, Chester takes offense at the thought. He won’t have anything to worry about will he?

Matt talks to Kitty about the newcomers when the younger man, Viney Stang, claims that he doesn’t really want the job. Later, on the quiet night patrol, Chester and matt report on the lack of activity. Chester goes his way, then a shot rings out. Matt suspects this may be the simpleminded Viney’s way of taking out his competition for the deputy job. Matt goes to talk with uncle Oliver, who isn’t too much more advanced than Viney when it comes to smarts. Will the missing Viney turn up any where?

Doc has a little promising news about Chester’s condition. Matt puts it on the street that not only is Chester alive, but he can name his shooter. Knowing the killer will try to finish the job with Chester, Matt waits in ambush in Doc’s office. Will the ambush work? Who will come after Chester?
