The terms of Lum’s big sale idea for the unlabeled cans is to sell them for a quarter a can. If you can manage to guess the contents of the can, before you open it, it’s free. Of course, you need to bring in your own mason jar to empty the opened can into, and take the contents home. Grandpap quietly reads the almanac as Lum and Abner tell about the success of the sale idea.

Lum is concerned over Abners enthusiasm when customers make a bad guess, and have to pay for their can. Grandpap claims he can tell what’s inside, and when US Quincy enters to make a guess, he seems to prove his point.

What exactly did Mr Quincey buy? Even when the can is opened, it’s still a mystery. The sale is such a success, the store may be out of cans by the end of the week. Should Lum buy more cans, and rip the labels off so they can keep the sale going? Lum heads to the wholesaler, and grandpap demonstrates his technique of guessing to Abner. How did he do it?
