Chester relaxes with Miss Kitty as he gambles away his earnings, when suddenly a fight breaks out. Chester manages to calm the matter, but it takes Matt to come in to put an end to the confrontation.
In voiceover, Matt gives the aftermath of the event, and time passes without much trouble after the two men have left town. An old friend comes to town to report to Matt that he has given up his guns for a new bride, and is in town to take over the Farroah table at the Long Branch. Pike, the gambler from the opening scene who ended up with the injured hand is back in town and Matt’s friend gives him a job at the gambling table.
More time goes by, and the suspicious Matt tells about it, and how maybe he was too synical in not giving Pike the benefit of the doubt. Then one evening the young bride shares her concerns with Matt that something may be brewing with her jealous husband, and the sneaky gambler. Might Matt also be a target of jealousy as well?
The story continues, when Matt rides up on Kitty as she comes back to town after a long ride with the young bride. Just in time for Cam, the jealous gambler to suspect that Matt and his wife have something going on.
Tension is running high, and threats are made. Matt is levelheaded enough to see through what Pike is doing, setting him up as the object of jealousy. The diffused situation reaches a new boiling point when shots ring out, but the shooter is someone who Matt couldn’t foresee. In the end, Matt has to do his duty, even if the violence is to help his friend. It’s a rough way to bring someone to their senses, and a scrifice for a greater good.
