Britt is to meet a friend at the train station. It’s the first trip out West for the young traveller. The teenager, Clay, is introduced to a range of typical characters in the town, and to the folks who will be giving him a place to stay.

The soft spoken, tenderfoot is to work on the ranch with Britt, who marvels in voiceover about some of the background of the kid and his family. A scuffle breaks out that shows the kid may be made of harder stuff than first thought, but he still has some things to learn.

The tenderfoot makes more than his fair share of mistakes, and gets on the nerves of the seasoned hands. They might be more patient with him, or offer a little more training to the guy, but his mistakes are ones that could cause someone to be seriously hurt. At least Britt does the right thing and takes the kid under his wing. Will the personal attention do the trick?

Is the kid just too much of a dude? Lies emerge, and the kid has his own baggage to deal with. Mostly about coming of age, being brave, and taking responsibility for his own actions. A tense scene with a rattlesnake helps to bring things home for young Clay when the horse he was mean to earlier saves his life.
