In the Jot Em Down Store, Lum has his head bandaged and gives Squire Skimp his version of the accident. He was so worried about watching Abner go for the gun in his pocket, he never figured he would be hit by such a thing as a falling box. Do you know, you could get an awful headache from something like that?
Lum confides in Squire that even when Abner is out of sight, he gets nervous wondering what he’s up to. Squire insists that Lum go get rest and lay down in the feed room. Cedric enters to show off his ice-cold glass of root beer that he made himself, with a little help from his mom. He set up a root beer stand outside of his house. Squire tries to tell him that the weather is too cold for selling root beer. Cedric doesn’t care, it cuts down on competition. As he leaves, he asks Squire to have Lum and Abner sample his root beer.
When Abner returns with Grandpap, Squire has to rush off to take care of a business emergency at his place. Though eager to enjoy a glass of root beer, Grandpap insists Abner put the glass down. Did Lum poison one, or both of the glasses? Grandpap gets the bright idea to wait until Lum comes in and let him pick the first glass. Of course, Lum doesn’t know anything about the root beer and thinks Abner is being suspicious. Cedric enters and sees that the gents of not sampled the root beer. Well, if they’re not going to drink it he will. But will he change his mind when Abner warns him about poison?
