After following the trail into the interior, Jack and his friends depart from their army escort. Lieutenant Rawlings gives some advice on the dangers they could encounter. The use of the odometer and map will help keep the gang from getting lost. He also gives them one more army tool, walkie talkies. Jack and Billy practice with the radios.
Besides looking for professor Lorrie, uncle Jim is to report on any sign of uprising. Joined by their friend Michel, the crew set out with pack horses. They discuss their route and possible dangers.
As they discuss the hope of finding professor Lorrie, Jack settles a horse that was spooked. He then notices an odd reflection. Could it be a signal for native sentries? That’s mighty queer.
