Returning to the Spindrift, uncle Jim talks to Jack about the suspicious activity of their old rival, Yates. They discuss the connection of spices to the man Jack encountered in the market. Jack thinks they’ll get answers if they board Yate’s ship. The crew realizes their friend Michel is missing. Has Yates kept his promise to return to the Spindrift? Signs of a struggle are evident, and Jack is sure he didn’t go along peaceably. Just then, Jack sees the rivalship weighing anchor. They won’t let their friend be kidnapped, will they?
Springing into action, everybody prepares to set sail. Hoist the sails, pull in the gangplank. Weigh anchor. Is there a chance to catch Yates? Betty worries that Michel will be hurt. There appears to be a scuffle on the other ship, and Michel is tossed overboard. Betty worries that a shark might get him, but the Spindrift is soon able to pull him to safety. He tells about the boarding, the struggle, and what Yates is doing. He’s mostly running rifles for uprisings, and not so much about professor Lorrie, but there’s enough of a connection for Jack and his friends to want to follow him.
