A local hotel owner in Dodge City insists on talking to Matt about a particular troublemaking mountain man. The wild and woolly man has driven off some of the other hotel guests.

Matt talks to the big man to see what the problem is. As the story unfolds, we learn that the Indian bride of the rough mountain man is the daughter of a chief from the Kiowa tribe. A tribe that has been the cause of a lot of havoc around Dodge in recent times past, and though she has been cultured and educated in the white man’s school, there are folks who still bear a grudge against the Indians.

Later, Chester and Matt do some shopping and run into Kitty. As they talk about that buffalo of a mountain man and his little Indian wife, they are interrupted by more folks who hold hard feelings. The big man isn’t looking for a fight, but if he’s pushed into it, he won’t back down from a challenge. His plan is to move on to points out West but I have a feeling that there will be trouble before he manages to leave.

Dan the mountain man is worried when his wife is missing, when suddenly Doc rides up with her in his wagon. She tells a story of being abducted, and taken out of town to be left alone on the prairie. That did it. Now Dan is staying, and is out for revenge.

Though Matt warns him not to, the mountain man swears he’ll stay in town until he gets his own style of revenge. How will this end? Dan spends the next days just sitting and waiting for the word when his wife, Rose, can identify her attackers. Will Matt be able to stay on his guard, or to prevent violence? Will Matt have to kill the man to stop him?

There’s a twist ending, and People end up dead as a result of bigotry, but at least one relationship is healed.
