The cavalry is under full attack by an Indian war party. Sgt Gorce gets the wounded Capt Quince to relative safety, and the situation is reviewed with Lt Ciberts. The raiders suddenly leabe, and Lt Ciberts is given command of the troop to return to the fort.

Meanwhile, Harrison stays with Quince and they set out at a slower, more manageable pace. Is there any hope of coming across a friendly settler? Might there still be Indians lurking? A deserted cabin provides shelter from prowling bands of raiders. The problem is that the cabin is occupied by crusty old Hatty Pelfry. The feisty old dame provides medical attention, but takes all the provisions for payment.

The pioneer woman tells about her hard life on the prairie, and manages to swipe anything of value from the soldiers that she can. With her relationsship with the Indians, they don’t bother her, and the only safe place is inside the cabin. Can the soldiers make a break for it? Where has Hatty hid their horses and provisions? Are they in danger of being traded to the Indians? What will it take to brighten up the woman and let them get back to the fortt?
