A rare ruby is missing, and the fair young French lady claims she knows who stole it. Going on a lead from Charlene, Marlowe finds himself on the seedy side of town, talking to a guy named Chalky, and the recipient of a thump on the head.
After following a string of characters, a body is turned up, and the possible killer could turn out to be Marlowe’s client. Did she do it? Who else would want the man dead? What is the next move for Philip, right after notifying the cops of the body?
