After his unexpected display on roller skates, the school board decided that Lum showed the kind of athletic prowess they need in their new football coach. Today in the Jot Em Down store, Lum tells Abner about his first day at practice. Are his doubts unfounded, or is he mixing up football for baseball?
Lum is afraid that some of the words coming out of the huddle might make him look bad in front of his sweetheart, Miss Emiline. Are they trying to guess his age or something? He doesn’t understand the big deal behind running the ball down to the other end of the baseball diamond.
Abner tries his best to offer advice against the other local football teams. When grandpap enters, he is thrilled over the decision to make Lum the new coach. Does he know anything about coaching football? He knows enough to light a fire under Lum to motivate him to be the best football coach that Pine Ridge has ever seen.
