Fibber McGee and Molly – Fibber Gets His Draft Notice. 410318

Fibber and Molly eagerly await their magazine subscriptions, and get the surprise of their lives when Fibber gets a draft notice instead. This has to be a joke, and Gildersleeve is just the guy who would pull a prank. Fibber tries to call, but talks to Mirt instead. Abigail Uppington visits and it’s all she can do to keep from laughing. As Fibber gets his affairs in order Billy Mills plays.

Down town, the banker, played by Gale Gordon, has trouble believing Fibber. The Old Timer, as librarian teases Fibber over the news. Even Harlow Wilcox can’t believe it, but it doesn’t stop him from turning the situation into a commercial. Fibber even drops in to visit Gildersleeve. Fibber brags how he was known as “Pigeon Towed McGee” in the last war. Kingsmen sing, Genevieve Sweet Genevieve.

Fibber meets the officer in charge at the train station. The officer, also Gale Gordon, sets Fibber straight, and points out an error on his draft notice.

PS: Fibber and Molly had one of the most supportive shows for the military during world war 2, and this is typical of how they used humor to do it. Just remember though, that this show was produced about 9 months before the war started for the United States, and about a year head of when the military was being built up, and put to use. Of course, the war in Europe had been building for a few years, and people in the United States knew about concentration camps, and other activities even at this time in history.
