Along with his indian companion Tonto, the masked rider of the plains led the fight for the cause of justice.
A worried bank accountant, Luthor, has some troubling news for the head of the bank. Mr Atwood is relieved to hear the shortage is in the whopping amount of 3 cents. The dedicated, and hard working Luthor is determined to track down the shortage, even if it means working overtime.
As the two part company, the story shifts to elsewhere to the Lone Ranger and Tonto, as they prepare to meet with Luthor Jones. The dedicated bookkeeper catches some grief from his girlfriend, hoping that he would be more adventuresome. Like that masked hero they’ve heard about. She leaves, and the Lone Ranger makes his visit to tell of his distrust over the bank officials. He suspects that there’s more than just the matter of 3 cents. More than once, attention has been called to Luthor’s fancy alarm watch. I’ll bet it plays a part later in the story.
As Lone Ranger and Luthor pour over the, figures they soon find discrepancies that multiply that 3 cent error into a shortage of $30000. The Lone Ranger suspects that Luthor is about to be set up for a fall over the huge embezzlement. At the same time, bandits lurk in the shadows, and follow Luthor and the Lone Ranger to the bank, where they look for more evidence.
In a suspicious position, our heros are exposed when the bandits raise a ruckus. If the intruders are found, it will go bad for them. Fortunately, Lone Ranger plans a distraction with the hope of taking attention away from Luthor. Instead, Luthor is caught, and the Lone Ranger rides away. Is he abandonining Luthor, leaving him to face the law alone?
The bank officials see their chance to lay blame on Luthor, but it depends on intercepting a letter. Hey, who is that indian lurking around? Don’t worry, indians don’t count for anything… unless the indian is Tonto! The listener is dropped hints that a bigger plan is brewing when Luthor gives up his watch, and Lone Ranger shows up at the site of the stage coach robbery, only to have Luthor’s watch stolen from him, along with the mail bag. See, what did tell you about that watch coming into play? But how will it be used?
Back in the courthouse, the judge is about to let Luthor speak in his defense. He tells about the shortage on the books. Will it make a difference in the matters that he is accused of? How will the stagecoach driver, and that stolen watch help? In dramatic fashion, Lone Ranger barges in to bring all the clues together, and tip the tables in the direction of justice. The twist ending forces all the rats to jump ship, and show themselves.
In the end, the mild mannered accountant proves to his girlfriend that he’s braver then she thought.
