Lum has returned, and tells Abner about the misadventures of travelling on the mail hack. The gents gossip about the meals over at sister Simpson’s boardinghouse. Grandpap joins the fun and claims the biscuits are at least pretty good.
The pressing news is whether Lum has been able to hire a school teacher or not. He claims to have made a decision, but holds off on telling what she looks like. First, he needs to phone the school board and report.
Abner can’t wait to hear to hear about the unmarried Emiline Platt, and her record in teaching. She has taught before, hasn’t she? With all the balancing, pitching, and weighing Lum has been doing, Abner wants to know exactly how much this teacher weighs. Can Lum tell his friends anything about the young lady at all?
