In the Jot Em Down store, we find Abner as jumpy as a rabbit’s nose. He has a. Hard time telling Cedric about his latest problem. As town marshal, he has the duty of arresting Lum on embezzlement charges. The review of how the old Dillard place was bought for grandpap, is told, and how funds from the trial were used in its purchase.
The uneasy discussion only gets worse when Lum arrives from registering the papers for the property at the county seat. Though he’s wore to a frazzle, Lum is feeling content in doing right by an old friend. Abner’s nervousness gets Lum’s attention, and is soon concerned for what’s bothering his pal. If only Abner would just come out with it.
The longer it drags out, the worse Abner feels. With Lum it can be hard to tell how he’ll react. Will the news start a new feud? Will it make Lum want to hit Abner over the head like a tromped on toad frog? Will it turn out any other way?
