Relaxing on Saturday, Philip looks forward to a nice, casual day. Instead, he gets a phone call from Mrs Cadwell, who needs his help in a missing persons case. Where has the chauffeur of the 75 year old woman gone? Philip detects something amiss with Mrs Cadwell, and her sister Tilda, but he sets out to unravel the mystery any how.
Stevens isn’t hard to find. Will he get back in touch with the elderly ladies? There’s still something odd in the job that Marlowe has been hired to do, but he can’t quite put his finger on the right question to have answered. Clues slowly emerge that involve stolen jade pieces.
Poking around the news archives, Philip digs up dirt on dead bodies, in particular Mr Cadwell. What about their contributions to the Live Oak museum? The scandal at hand is one powered by dedication, rather than the usual motives of revenge or jealousy, and with Marlowe’s help an old lady just might live out her days in a little comfort.
