In the Anderson home, the girls compete for mother’s attention. Her nerves get stretched to her breaking point when Bud adds to the fray with a slamming door, and news of his own. Jim may have the most disturbing news when his job threatens to take the family out of their quiet small town life, and thrust them into the big city of New York. Margret tries to keep her composure, but the kids don’t want to leave their friends, and clubs. Not even the big city lure of culture, arts, or pro ball teams seems to lighten the load.
As Jim is visited by a couple of his pals, Hector, and Ed, mom takes the kids to the other room for her own conference. Will she convince them of the benefits of the job promotion? Holy cow! Jumping Creepers! Why did they have to have a dad who was so smart? All Cathy knows is that she hopes she never grows up to become a father.
The men begin to see that the move may not be so good. It’s not only the kids who have set down roots and friendships. the guys will miss their thirty year history together. Is it too late to back out of the promotion? Time to face the family who has flipped to the other side, and are ready to enjoy life in New York. Jim knows better, but the back and forth act has everyone feeling like yoyos.
Which will it be? Leaving duty, and responsibility in small town society, where everybody has a place, and can participate? Or forsake it all for the high class attractions of big city sophistication? A phone call from the boss means the deal is set, like it or not. The Anderson’s will like it… right?
