Typical business for Shannon’s Place is like any other. We find Slate and Saylor on the way to pick up their hotel stationary, but there’s something wrong. Carlos Sanchez is found to be missing. Juan Sanchez isn’t thrilled that Slate has been asking about his brother, Carlos. Is this a simple matter of private family trouble? Slate’s curiosity is aroused when the poor printer’s messed up shop has been cleaned up, and new, expensive equipment is in its place.
Carlos is found, and Saylor takes him in to the authorities. Why won’t he share any secrets with Slate or Saylor? Turner is a man from the American Consulate, and doesn’t take much convincing to take Carlos under his care. Slate still has too many unanswered questions, with hints that the printer does the quality of work to be a good counterfeiter. His curiosity soon finds himself looking down the business end of a pistol. It doesn’t put him off, instead Slate forms his own plan to pull a sting operation to clear up his suspicions.
