Enjoying the opera, Holmes and Watson comment on how the ladies with the most beautiful voices, weigh a lot. I think… how much is 20 stone anyway? His presence has been requested behind the scenes of the opera stage. A new star is said to soon be born, and jealousy could be forming. The new star and her brother sound American, not Italian. A matter that intrigues Holmes all the more.
The back stage drama is beneath what Holmes wants to entangle himself with, thinking the trivialities will work themselves out. When a report of an attack to the twin sister is reported, more phobias manifest in her. Still, Holmes isn’t overly concerned, though compassionate as far as he can be. What will it take to get him to realize there’s devil’s work afoot?
Has the American understudy acted underhandedly to overthrow the opera star by her fear of cats? The public is up in arms, but the motive behind the earlier attack on the twin sister is a mystery to Watson. Holmes has a pretty good idea, and sets up his own scheme to expose the truth.
PS: A stone is 14 pounds. so our hefty Opera star weighed 20 times that, or 280 pounds.
