Not much has been learned about the stranger in town, other than he has been sampling water from near by springs. When Abner returns from grocery orders, he finds Lum fretting over not being invited to participate in a meeting. he’s just as important, and just as big a businessman as any other in town
Abner’s help isn’t helping Lum’s ego, and might win him a whomp on the head. Even if he had an invite, would Lum even go now? Maybe if he acts unconcerned at the lack of invitation, it will help get him in. Abner gets coached on what to say when he phones the big wigs on Lum’s behalf.
As Lum grumbles about Ezra Seastrunk, Caleb Wehandt, Wolf Bates, and the rest, Abner takes his sarcasm as serious, and gives his honest assessments on why those are successful men in town. When a phone call from Mr Webster, the stranger, comes in, Lum doesn’t need to be asked twice to take part… but it isn’t him that Webster is interested in.
