Now let’s see what’s happening in Pine Ridge. Lum is beginning to regret his idea of kidnapping Abner. The townsfolk are more upset then he ever expected, and he is afraid the trail of clues will lead back to him. A detective is hired to investigate, and says he can find the kidnapper shortly. Talk on the street is that people are ready to string up the criminal when they catch him.
Lum talks to Abner about his worries. Abner gets a kick out of the ordeal, and assures Lum that there really was never a kidnapping, since he came to Lums and has been hiding out voluntarily. What will the town think if they learn that Lum planned the whole thing as a publicity stunt to improve his standing in the town.
Abner gets a little confused at the concept of imagining something in his mind. Although I can’t figure why, as he begins to imagine imagining. And putting a lot of effort into it too.
Lum is worried and tries to think of away to put this ordeal to an end. Should he come clean, and admit his whole scheme? Will the town be even madder, and want to run Lum out of town? He ponders over leaving town for good, and all the trouble that he has caused. Abner tries to talk Lum out of leaving town, and wants him to stay with his friends.
Lum makes up is mind. He gets on the phone to tell Abner’s wife Lizabeth the whole story, but before Lum can get his story started, Dick Huttleston enters, and discovers Abner in the house with Lum. To save face, and come to Lum’s rescue Abner tells a tale of how Lum saved his life from the imaginary kidnappers, and builds Lum up as a hero.
