Down in Pine Ridge Lum has been trying his best to repay the stockholders in the silver mine, to the extent of selling or mortgaging everything he owns. It all may be to no good affect when the Judge says his actions can be interpreted as a sign of his guilt. His only real hope is in locating Squire Skimp.
Today Abner visits Lum in his empty house. They talk about the rolling store, and what needs to be reordered. Abner’s spelling and handwriting give Lum a little trouble deciphering what is needed.
Lum finds a detective kit that Abner bought when he first became constable. Abner advises Lum to use some of the disguises in it, and use the techniques it teaches to locate Squire. Lum doesn’t see how dressing up as an indian, or a bear, or a soldier will make him blend in, or be able to sneak up on Squire.
Somehow the conversation turns to spies, and fighting Germans in World war 1. Lum has his own idea to advertise in newspapers. Before Abner can get the issue too confused Dick enters with a clue that indicates that Squire is hiding in Tulsa.
