Now, let’s see what’s happening down in Pine Ridge. Lum has been hired on at the Jottem Down store, working as clerk for Abner. After a week of abuse, he has had enough and decided to work with their longstanding rival Squire Skimp. Today Dick stops in at Lum’s house to try to talk sense to Lum. He tries to explain that Abner was just trying to be harsh to teach Lum a lesson.
Lum has a hard time believing it. Abner tries to come in to apologize, but Lum sics his dog on him. Dick asks Lum what kind of job Squire has in mind for him, but Lum doesn’t know. He just sees it as a way to get out from under Abner’s thumb.
Squire is to return later, and give Lum all the details. Dick is skeptical, and I have to agree that Squire is a person to beware of. Squire is almost mistaken for Abner when he finally appears. Dick takes off, and Squire shares the details of the new business venture with Lum. All it takes is to get to the part where Lum will be president, and he’s sold. What about that looking before you leap speach you gave to Dick? My spidey senses detect trouble ahead for Lum.
