Down in Pine Ridge, Lum has had to take a job working for Abner after his movie theater burned down. Today Abner is argueing with Lum over his workmanship. Abner takes a phone call order, and gloats a little over his new position over Lum in the store.
Lum is having a hard time dealing with the low position, and low pay. Abner gets a bit confused with his new power, and almost gets on the phone to boss his wife Lizabeth around. He plans to invite Lum over for a special meal.
Dick Huttleston enters the store and talks with Abner about Lum’s plight, and the news that he’s heard from grandpap. Dick warns Abner again about throttling back with Lum before he pushes things too far. It’s time to work on being friends again, instead of trying to teach Lum a lesson.
Abner decides to keep riding Lum until he has him over for dinner. When Lum is spotted talking with Squire, he has already taken all the sass from Abner he can stand. Lum quits, and announces that he’s going to work with Squire from here on out.
