Down in Pine Ridge, Squire has begun his rival theater, and Lum and Abner are feeling the pinch in competing for resources. The two friends talk about how to start a matinee for the kids. Though they have lost a battle or two to Squire, Lum gloats over the fact that he has all the available films to show.
The phone rings to remind our friends that they still have a grocery store to run. Grandpap enters to announce that he’s quitting. Squire has hired him away to play piano in his theater, instead of Lum’s Planetarium theater. The phone rings with more bad news. More of Lum’s hired help is being lured away to work for Squire. When Cedric returns after learning to run the movie projector, Lum’s good mood is torn down again when even Cedric announces his new job with Squire.
